SONG REVIEW
Song Title: drop dead
Artist: Olivia Rodrigo
Song Release: 17/04/2026
Album: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love
✨ INTRODUCTION
→ Olivia Rodrigo is a star. Another masterpiece has been released as the lead single from her upcoming album, ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’, and I have high hopes – this song guarantees it.
🎧 SOUND & PRODUCTION
→ Coming into this song I was expecting a sad pop tune. However, the song opens with repeated, upbeat synth sounds, marking this song as cheery. When the first chorus is concluded, the drumkit is added to increase the energy levels; the synth sounds decrease whilst we focus on the beats of the drum and Rodrigo’s gorgeous vocals. Then, whenever we come to the guitar solo, it’s clear that not only this song is a synth-pop, but it includes elements of pop rock as well.
📝 LYRICS & MEANING
→ I find in Olivia Rodrigo’s songs that she doesn’t challenge herself with the lyrics. Personally, I found them quite dry and basic. I will admit they are memorable, and they do show the emotions she feels, but they should tell instead. From the lyrics, we know that this is your typical song about girl wants boy. (This tends to be a common theme in modern pop music, so this didn’t surprise me.) Recently though, dating rumors have sparked between her and Cameron Winter (the musician from the band, ‘Geese’). Am I sensing a link here...?
🎤 VOCALS
→ Her vocals never fail to blow me away. Rodrigo’s clear, crisp diction ensures to satisfy the listener as well as those high notes produced. Olivia Rodrigo’s head voice certainly suits her, and I pray that she uses it more frequently in the upcoming album.
💭 VIBE / FEELING
→ This could be played on any joyous occasion. Parties, social events, or even in your bedroom getting ready in the morning – this song will bring positive vibes to your day. This song’s ecstatic vibes allow the listener to belt this song out (with a hairbrush as a microphone) at the top of their lungs. This song is 100% thrilling!
🔁 REPLAY VALUE
→ Yes. Yes. Yes. (And 1,00 more.) I could never be sick of this song, in fact, I might even make it my new alarm, or, I could go nuts and say, ringtone! - I’ll look like one of the cool kids now. As soon as ‘drop dead’ starts blaring from my phone, not only will I know it’s probably my mum making sure I know where to walk after school, but I’ll be in an uplifting mood thanks to Olivia Rodrigo.
🔥 BEST PART
→ Can we talk about that first chorus? Whenever the drumkit comes in, I was not expecting the song to go from upbeat to EXCITING!! I even did a little boogie at this part because it called for a dance break. I was having so much fun in my quiet house with headphones on, blasting this tune. So, thank you to Olivia for allowing me to get a couple minutes of movement in the morning! In fact, I’m adding this to my playlist on Spotify.
😬 CRITICISMS
→ One thing... It felt slow, I feel like the timing could be slightly quicker. If it had been that way, my energy levels would have been skyrocketing!
💭 PERSONAL THOUGHTS
→ Honestly, I loved it - if that hasn’t been said enough. Olivia Rodrigo never fails to excite me. If this is the lead single for her new upcoming album, then I will say it might be a masterpiece. I love the energy this song brings (especially since I’m listening to it at 6am before school, on a Monday morning), Miss Rodrigo has done a very swell job. Also, special mention to Amy Allen and Dan Nigro for co-writing this song, it sounds wonderful.
